You Can Draw in 30 Days – Day 9

This lesson was The Rose. This lesson took at least an hour to complete. There was some pre-drawing practice and then the final drawing of a rose. Again, these are not life accurate drawings. They are presented to teach methods for presenting an object in 3D space. So that when you do want to do something a bit more realistic you can.

So a lot more foreshadowing and shading was done. I present to you two pages for tonight’s lesson – Flags and Roses.

You Can Draw in 30 Days – Day 8

Cool Koalas? Yep that is what Day/Lesson 8 was called. This lesson focused on using texturing as a shading technique rather than… you know, shading.

After some textured balls, and who doesn’t love texturing balls, I drew a Koala. I think it’s OK. It is definitely not supposed to be an actual Koala, more like a Kartoon Koala. Let’s call him Kevin the Koala. Say hello to Kevin.

You Can Draw in 30 Days – Day 7

Almost caught up. Today is the 9th of January and I completed lesson 7. So I’m 2 days behind my plan to complete by the end of January.

Day 7 lesson was Advanced-Level Cubes. Basically taking what was learned on Day 6 with Cubes and expanding. Putting together structures. Sounds simple, but not as easy to handle the foreshortening as I thought.

Here are the results:

You Can Draw in 30 Days – Day 6

Doubled up on lessons and completed Day 6 last night. Stacking Tables. Moving on.

You Can Draw in 30 Days – Day 5

Can you believe I’m sticking with this drawing stuff? 5 days in a row. I’m thinking of double up tomorrow (Sunday) so I can finish exactly at the end of January. We shall see.

Today’s lesson expanded on the Cube turning it into a box. I first did the basic box from the lesson and then the lesson expanded to creative versions – an empty trunk and a box of… not sure, packing popcorn? bouncy balls?

You Can Draw in 30 Days – Day 4

Tonight’s lesson was The Cube.

Very interesting tips on how to draw a cube. Very helpful. Using guide dots and reference lines made it pretty straight forward and easy.

And then adding the shading learned from previous days brought out a 3D box. I used my new Faber-Castell artist pens (.5mm) to highlight the keeper lines so I could erase the guide dots and lines for a clean cube to shade.

Here is tonight’s results:

You Can Draw in 30 Days – Day 3

Day 3, Advanced Spheres. More spheres and more shading. How’d I do?

I’m getting the hang of the shading, bu I can’t draw a circle if my life depended on it.

The second grouping of various size circles I used round objects around my desk.

You Can Draw in 30 Days – Day 2

Third day of drawing but second day of lessons (first day was a pre-test drawing). Tonight’s lesson expanded on the sphere and use of shading, but using overlapping spheres to introduce 3 Laws of Drawing.

3 Laws learned tonight, plus one theorem:

  • Size – draw objects LARGER to make then seem closer, smaller to make then look farther away
  • Placement – draw objects lower on paper to make look closer, higher to make farther away
  • Overlapping – draw objects in front of or partial block to make closer, behind to make farther away
  • Nook and cranny shadowing – separate, define and identify objects
Day 2 of 30

So how did I do?

You Can Draw in 30 Days – Day 1

Day 1 of 30

Continuing with my drawing lessons from the book You Can Draw in 30 Days, tonight’s lesson was The Sphere.

Learning to draw a simple circle is not enough. You need to learn to shade the circle to make it look three dimensional, like a sphere or ball.

Here is tonight’s results:

You Can Draw in 30 Days – Day 0

As mentioned before, I purchased the book You Can Draw in 30 Days and started reading it today. The first activity is not really part of the 30 days of lessons, its a kick off day, I called it Day 0. For Day 0 there was reading about the author, Mark Kistler and his teaching philosophy and then there was a Pretest.

The Pretest consisted to drawing 3 items, 2 minutes per drawing. This will be my Before pictures that will be used to compare to my After pictures once I’ve complete the 30 lessons. I was tasked with drawing a house, an airplane and a bagel. Here is my resulting drawings:

As you can see it is pretty rudimentary and basic. Could pass for playing Pictionary but not the level of quality I want to be at.

So tomorrow I will start Day 1 – The Sphere. Check back in to see my progress. And check out more of Mark Kistler on his YouTube site as well.
